Charging Your Car at Home: Which Charger to Choose?

Charging Your Car at Home: Which Charger to Choose?

Votre voiture passe la majorité de son temps dans le stationnement de la maison, alors pourquoi ne pas en profiter pour la recharger ?

Your car spends most of its time parked at home, so why not take advantage of that time to charge it? Which charger should you choose?

Most level 2 chargers will offer you between 35 km and 70 km of range per hour of charging, which means that a full charge for your vehicle will be completed in just a few hours. Considering that your car spends most of its time parked at home and that the vast majority of Quebecers travel less than 100 km daily, home charging should be the least of your worries!

When we talk about level 2 chargers, we refer to chargers that require a voltage of 240 volts. On the market, level 2 chargers typically range between 30 amps and 48 amps. Chargers of 60 amps and 80 amps are now entering the market, but these models are unlikely to be widespread as few private residences have the electrical capacity for such installations.

Flo Chargers on Sale for $799 Until Stocks Last

The Flo X5 and Flo G5 chargers (30 amps) are among the best-selling chargers in Quebec, notably because they are Quebec products manufactured in Mauricie, but also because of their excellent quality/price ratio. These chargers used to sell for up to $1,445 and are now on sale for $799 until stocks last. Depending on the vehicle you own, they will give you between 35 km and 40 km of range per hour of charging, which means you will have more than 300 km of range after 8 hours of charging.

If you are someone who travels a lot and doesn’t stay home for long, a more powerful charger like the EvDuty-60 (48 amps) or the Wallbox Pulsar 48A can be good solutions for you. They will give you between 65 km and 70 km per hour of charging, so it will take a little over 4 hours to reach the same 300 km of range. However, it is important to note that the installation of a 48-amp charger is a bit more expensive because the required electrical wiring needs to be of higher quality (6 gauge). You also need to ensure there is enough space in your electrical panel for installing a 60-amp breaker.

There are also 40-amp chargers such as the EVduty-50 (40 amps) or Wallbox Pulsar 40A, which represent a good compromise between 30-amp and 48-amp chargers. They will offer you between 50 km and 55 km per hour of charging, and the installation costs are roughly the same as for a 30-amp charger.

Please note that 40A chargers offer the option to connect with a NEMA 14-50 plug (stove outlet), whereas a 48A charger requires a fixed connection only. The advantage of a NEMA 14-50 plug is the ability to move the charger. Some people use the NEMA 14-50 option to move the charger inside the garage in winter and outside during the summer season. Others choose the NEMA option to take the charger to their cottage or a friend’s house.
